Where to start planning your home renovation
It can be tough to figure out where to start when thinking about a home renovation. We love helping our clients look through the options, budgets, and plans for making updates to their homes. Here are five tips on where to start when you’re thinking about your home renovation.
Determine your goals
Decide what you want to accomplish first then go from there. Do you want to add more space? Change the layout? Update some of the aesthetics in a certain room? Figure out the most important thing you want to achieve with your home renovation.
Set your budget
Start a renovation savings account and talk to your bank about financing options. Knowing your numbers will empower you while making decisions throughout the process. Your budget will be more than fixtures and appliances. You may need funds to move out, store your belongings, rent a place during construction, and have help settling in after the project is finished.
Get buy-in from the family before you start
Projects often get stalled because the family doesn’t have buy-in from the start. Use the ideas phase to make sure your family is on the same page (literally) before you begin. Look at samples, colors, and pictures together to discuss options for your own home.
If it’s a big project, make plans to live elsewhere
Big renovations might make it really difficult to live at home while it’s under construction. Save your sanity by renting a place near your home to give your family some consistency during a time of change.
Give yourself time
When you’re planning your renovation, give yourself more time than you may need. Renovations often come with surprises that don’t appear until you’re taking down walls, digging up soil, or placing orders for products. You’ll thank yourself later when you have more time to finish the project the way you envisioned it.
